AUDITION: MA Thesis Project "Late: A Cowboy Song"

Late: a Cowboy Song
By Sarah Ruhl
Directed by Olivia Cowell

Where & When:
Tuesday, August 25th 6:30-9:00pm
Wednesday, August 26th 6:30-8:00pm
Callbacks will be held Wednesday, August 26th 8:00-9:00pm

Audition times may be reserved by contacting the director (see contact information
below), otherwise auditions will be held on a first come, first to audition basis.
Auditions will be held at 1105 G. Street, Napa (Fireside Room, Napa
Community SDA Church)

Performances will take place at the Sonoma Community Center Backstage Theatre.
October 2nd, 4th, 9th, and 10th.

What to Prepare:
Auditions will consist of a cold read of the script.
If you are a singer, please have a 1 ½ minute song in any style of music that best
showcases your voice and range. An accompanist will be provided, but be prepared
to sing acappella.

What to Bring: Your most current acting resume. A list of any dates of conflict.

Roles Available:
Mary- (Woman in her mid-20s to early 30s). Mary is a voice of query throughout
the play. Always in love. Struggles with self-identity, and toils with making
decisions for herself. Married to Crick.
Red- (Woman in her mid-20s to early 30s). A female cowboy. Displays quiet
confidence, lives alone at a country horse stable. She has a very straightforward
approach to life. She sings “campfire cowboy-esque” songs.
Crick- (Man in his mid-20s to early 30s). Mary’s husband. Crick displays the most
obvious emotions. Sensitive. Loves art, and his wife.

Late: A Cowboy Song is a tragi-comedy in two acts. Set in a version of Pittsburg, during an unspecified
time the three characters introduce us to three very different ideas of happiness. Focusing on topics of
what is socially “acceptable”, the magical realism of the play embodies all the wonderment and flaws that
make us human.

Playwright Sarah Ruhl has been honored with many awards including the MacArthur Foundation
Fellowship in 2006, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2005, Susan Smith Blackburn Award in 2004. She is
one of the most renowned and unique voices of contemporary playwrights today.

For more information, or to reserve an audition time please contact director
Olivia Cowell via email at: ocowell@sfsu.edu.

Someone broke a prop I checked out. Why am I being asked to pay for it?

The person who signed the rental agreement form is responsible for all damages. If a Prop is broken because of rental neglect, the Prop Shop Supervisor may decide on one of the following:

The Renter replaces the prop

The Renter reimburses the Prop Shop for a dollar amount set by the Prop Shop Supervisor

The renter comes to the shop by arrangement with the Prop Shop Supervisor for instruction on how to repair the prop in a “prop-er” fashion.

The final decision is that of the Prop Shop Supervisor.

AUDITION: Vinegar Tom

The Spring 2010 Musical Production of VINEGAR TOM will be held in the fall.

NO AUDITION TIME OR DATE HAVE YET BEEN SET.

Auditions will require a 1 minute contemporary monologue, a song. Please bring sheet music or accompanying instrument.
**Dialect proficiency will be a plus.

This project will require commitment for the full Spring semester.

This project was developed in the S09 Musical Playthings class with play and lyrics by Caryl Churchill and Original Music and direction by Barbara Damashek .

This is a feminist work concerning the 17th century Witch Hysteria in England. It has a Play within a Play structure and a Brechtian Chorus that comments on the action through song.

**Churchill specifies that no character in the 17th century play may sing. Therefore the lead characters are technically not required to do so. However, all the music is created by the Ensemble Chorus. At and some point EVERYONE will participate in the choral element of the work with singing, movement and/or instrumentation.

There are 6 or 7 women’s roles
And 6 or 7 male roles
Plus the chorus ensemble.

The play can be found
- in the Routledge Press edition of CHURCHILL: Plays: Volume One.
